Interviewing & Negotiation
How do I explain my value clearly in a senior-level interview?
Connect a specific business need to a leadership pattern you can prove with relevant outcomes.

Senior candidates often have too much evidence, not too little. Years of experience can produce long answers filled with context, stakeholders, and detail. The interviewer may admire the career and still struggle to identify the value most relevant to this role.
Lead with the point
Before describing the history, state what the example demonstrates. Name the problem, the judgment you brought, and the outcome. Then add only the context needed to make the evidence credible.
This is not about making every answer short. It is about giving the listener a clear structure so the detail supports the decision.
Build around their mandate
Identify the few things the company must believe before it will hire you. Do they need a builder, transformer, operator, commercial integrator, or people leader? Choose examples that answer those questions.
Close the loop explicitly: explain why the pattern in your experience matters for the challenge they are trying to solve now.
Why this matters in a CPG career
A senior CPG interview is a business conversation about risk and future value. The company is evaluating whether you can understand its customer, category, commercial, operational, and organizational tensions quickly enough to help lead through them. Strong candidates collaborate in the conversation instead of waiting to be judged question by question.
Questions worth answering
- What business decision is underneath the question I am being asked?
- Does my answer make the relevance clear, or am I asking the interviewer to connect the dots?
- What thoughtful question would help us evaluate the opportunity together?
Before your next interview, write the three beliefs the company must hold about you to make an offer. Match one concise proof story to each belief.
