Networking & Visibility
How can an interview strengthen my network even when I do not get the job?
Treat every interview as a substantive professional conversation and preserve the relationship after the decision.
Treat every interview as a substantive professional conversation and preserve the relationship after the decision.
An interview introduces you to leaders, recruiters, and peers who now understand your experience more deeply than most people in your network. If you approach the process only as a transaction with one possible outcome, that relationship disappears when the role does.
Create value in the conversation
Bring insight, curiosity, and respect for the business problem. Ask questions that help both sides think. The goal is not to give away a consulting project; it is to demonstrate the quality of your judgment and engagement.
People remember candidates who made the conversation useful, regardless of who was selected.
Continue professionally
Thank the people involved with specificity. If the process ends, acknowledge the decision graciously and express interest in staying connected where the relationship was genuine.
Later, share a relevant article, congratulate a milestone, or reconnect without reopening the hiring decision.
Why this matters in a CPG career
The CPG industry is deeply connected, but useful relationships are not built through generic outreach. They grow through informed curiosity, remembered context, relevant introductions, and thoughtful contribution. The goal is not to collect contacts. It is to become easier to understand, trust, remember, and recommend.
Questions worth answering
- What did I learn about this person that should shape the next conversation?
- What can I contribute that would be genuinely useful without forcing a transaction?
- Is my direction clear enough for someone else to recognize a relevant opportunity?
Choose one relationship you want to continue. Send something useful that connects directly to your previous conversation, then note the next natural reason to reconnect.
